Artist management agreement for comedians, anchors and live acts

Most artist management in India is a handshake, which is why performers say managers take cuts on deals the comic found and pay months late. This is the agreement C4E Talent signs with the artists it represents, with our name taken out.

The short answer

An artist management agreement sets out what the manager does, the commission and what it is charged on, who collects the client's money and when the artist is paid, whether it is exclusive, how long it lasts, how either side ends it, and which bookings still carry commission after it ends. This template covers each point in 15 clauses.

Who signs
The artist and the manager or agency.
When
Before the manager quotes the artist to a single client.

Our own terms: 20% commission, the artist paid within 7 days of the client paying us, and nothing taken on work the artist finds without us. The template leaves every number blank, so it works for any manager.

The agreement, clause by clause

Each clause reads as it does in the download. Fill the [BLANKS], and where a line starts with ☐, keep the option you want and strike the rest.

1

The parties

1.1This agreement is made on [DATE] between [ARTIST FULL NAME], professionally known as [STAGE NAME], of [ADDRESS] (the "Artist"), and [MANAGER OR AGENCY NAME], of [ADDRESS] (the "Manager").

☐ The Artist is under 18. [PARENT OR GUARDIAN NAME], the Artist's [RELATIONSHIP], signs for the Artist, and payments under clause 7 go to [ACCOUNT].

What it meansUse the legal name and the stage name. Contracts, invoices and TDS certificates need the legal name; clients know the stage name. A minor cannot make a binding contract in India, so a parent or guardian signs for an artist under 18.
2

What the Manager is appointed for

2.1The Artist appoints the Manager to find, negotiate and administer bookings for the Artist's live performances, namely [STAND-UP / HOSTING / MUSIC / OTHER], at corporate events, private events, colleges and public shows (the "Work").

☐ The appointment is exclusive for the Work in [TERRITORY, FOR EXAMPLE INDIA AND THE UAE]: the Artist will refer every enquiry for the Work to the Manager.

☐ The appointment is non-exclusive: the Artist may work with other agents and take bookings directly.

2.2Not included unless added in writing: digital content and brand deals, film, television and streaming, publishing, and the Artist's own ticketed shows.

What it meansSay exactly which work the manager handles. A manager who books corporate shows has no claim on a Netflix special unless the contract says so. Exclusive means every enquiry goes through the manager; decide it here, not later.
3

What the Manager will do

3.1The Manager will: (a) promote the Artist to clients and event agencies; (b) maintain a profile page for the Artist with their videos and rates; (c) answer enquiries within [1] working day; (d) quote, negotiate and contract each booking using the Artist Booking Agreement or terms at least as good; (e) invoice clients, collect payment and chase late payers; (f) brief the Artist on each event; and (g) keep a record of every enquiry and booking, which the Artist may see on request.

3.2The Manager represents other acts. When it puts more than one act forward for the same brief, it will tell the Artist.

What it meansThis is the job. The last item matters most: an artist should be able to see every enquiry that came in under their name, including the ones the manager turned down. The conflict line is there because every manager has more than one act, and an artist should know when they are one of three names on the same shortlist.
4

What the Artist will do

4.1The Artist will keep a shared calendar of available dates up to date, reply to the Manager about a booking within [24] hours, perform each confirmed booking professionally, and tell the Manager at once about any enquiry for the Work that reaches the Artist directly.

4.2The Artist's published rates are set out in Schedule 1. The Manager will not quote below them without the Artist's agreement for that booking.

What it meansAn artist who answers in three days loses the booking. A manager who quotes below the rate card undercuts the artist. Both are fixed here.
5

No booking without the Artist's yes

5.1The Manager will not confirm any booking without the Artist's agreement, by message or email, to the date, the fee, the travel and the content brief.

5.2The Artist signs each booking agreement. ☐ The Manager may sign a booking agreement for the Artist, but only one the Artist has agreed under this clause.

What it meansOne line, and it settles the most common fight: the manager said yes to a 7 a.m. flight and a 10 p.m. show. The second line decides who signs. Letting the manager sign saves a day; it never lets the manager sign something the artist has not agreed.
6

Commission

6.1The Manager's commission is [20]% of the fee for each booking for the Work that the Manager introduces or negotiates during the term.

6.2Commission is charged on the performance fee only, excluding GST, travel, stay, and any expenses the client pays or reimburses.

☐ Bookings the Artist finds without the Manager carry no commission.

☐ Bookings the Artist finds carry commission of [10]% if the Manager contracts and collects them.

6.3GST on the commission, if any, is charged by the Manager on its own invoice to the Artist.

What it meansTwenty percent is the figure Indian comics quote for managers. What matters as much as the rate is what it is charged on: never on GST, never on the flight. The third line answers the complaint we hear most from performers, a cut taken on a deal the artist found.
7

Who collects the money and when the Artist is paid

7.1Clients pay the Manager. The Manager will pay the Artist the fee less commission and any TDS deducted, within [7] days of receiving each payment from the client.

7.2With each payment the Manager will send a statement showing the client, the gross fee, the commission, any TDS, and the net paid. The Manager will issue or pass on TDS certificates on time.

7.3If a client pays late, the Manager will chase it. The Artist is not paid for a booking until the client pays, unless the Manager agreed in writing to pay the Artist in advance.

7.4The Manager will record money received for the Artist separately from its own money ☐ and hold it in a bank account used only for artists' money, and will not use it for its own costs.

7.5Once a year, on [14] days' notice, the Artist or the Artist's accountant may inspect the Manager's records of the Artist's bookings and payments. If the inspection shows the Artist was underpaid by more than [5]%, the Manager pays the shortfall and the cost of the inspection.

What it meansSeven days, in writing, with a statement. Late payment is the loudest complaint performers in India have, and the fix is a date and a statement. If you are the artist, ask what happens to money while the manager holds it. This template answers: it is recorded as yours, never spent on the manager's costs, and you can have your accountant check the books once a year.
8

Expenses

8.1The Manager pays its own costs of running its business, including its website, marketing and travel to find work.

8.2Costs incurred for the Artist, such as a showreel shoot, photos or a paid listing, are charged to the Artist only if the Artist agreed them in writing in advance, at cost, with receipts.

What it meansA manager's overheads are covered by the commission. Anything else needs the artist's prior yes and a receipt.
9

Name, image and material

9.1The Artist allows the Manager to use the Artist's name, stage name, photos, biography and videos to promote the Artist during the term.

9.2The Artist owns their material, jokes, scripts and recordings. Nothing in this agreement transfers any of it to the Manager.

What it meansThe manager can use your face to sell you. The manager never owns your set.
10

Term

10.1This agreement starts on [DATE] and lasts [12] months. It renews for another [12] months only if both parties confirm in writing.

What it meansA year is long enough to build a booking pipeline and short enough to walk away from. No automatic renewal: if it is working, both sides will want to sign again.
11

Ending the agreement

11.1Either party may end this agreement by [30] days' written notice, for any reason.

11.2Either party may end it at once if the other breaches it and does not put it right within [14] days of written notice.

11.3If the Artist cannot perform for more than [90] days in a row through illness or injury, either party may end this agreement by written notice. Commission on bookings already confirmed stays due.

What it meansThirty days' notice either way. An artist who wants to leave should be able to, and a manager who cannot sell an act should be able to say so. The illness line lets either side close the agreement cleanly if the artist is off stage for months, without anyone having to call it a breach.
12

After the agreement ends

12.1Bookings confirmed before the end date carry commission even if performed after it, and the Manager will still collect and pay them under clause 7.

☐ Bookings for the Work from clients the Manager introduced, confirmed within [6] months after the end date, carry commission at [HALF THE RATE / THE FULL RATE].

☐ No commission on anything confirmed after the end date.

12.2Nothing in this agreement stops the Artist working with any other manager or client after it ends.

What it meansThe commission tail. A manager who brought a client should be paid if that client books within a few months, which is fair. A clause that stops the artist working after the contract ends is not enforceable in India anyway: the Contract Act voids restraints of trade.
13

Confidentiality

13.1Each party will keep confidential the other's fees, client names, contracts and personal details, during this agreement and after it, except as needed to perform it or as the law requires.

What it meansYour rate and your clients are your business. They stay that way when you part.
14

Disputes and the law

14.1This agreement is governed by the laws of India. The courts at [CITY] have jurisdiction.

14.2If a dispute arises, the parties will first talk for [15] days. ☐ If that fails, it goes to arbitration by a sole arbitrator in [CITY] under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996.

What it meansPick a city. Talk first. Most disputes between an artist and a manager are about one payment, and a statement under clause 7 usually settles them.
15

General

15.1This agreement and its schedule are the whole agreement. Changes count only if both parties confirm them in writing, including by email. It may be signed electronically. If any clause is unenforceable, the rest stands.

What it meansThe boring clause. It stops a promise made on a call from overriding the paper.

Law and tax notes

Restraint of trade

Section 27 of the Indian Contract Act 1872 makes void any agreement that restrains someone from carrying on a lawful profession, trade or business; the only exception in the section is the sale of goodwill. A clause banning the artist from working with others after the agreement ends will not hold. A commission tail on clients the manager introduced is a payment term, not a restraint.

Tax

TDS is deducted by the client on the gross fee it pays. The manager passes that credit to the artist with the statement in clause 7. Ask your accountant how the 2025 Income-tax Act applies, and whether the manager's commission needs its own GST invoice.

Stamp duty

Stamp duty. An agreement signed in India attracts stamp duty under the Stamp Act of the state where it is signed. Pay it, usually through e-stamping, before or at signing. An unstamped agreement is not void, but a court will not accept it as evidence until the duty and any penalty are paid.

UAE

Add the UAE to the territory in clause 2 only if the manager actually sells there, and have a UAE lawyer check the agreement for bookings in the UAE.

Questions people ask

How much commission does an artist manager take in India?

Around 20% is the figure comedians quote for managers, and C4E Talent charges 20% to the artists it represents. What it is charged on matters as much: this template charges it on the fee only, never on GST or travel.

Can a manager take commission on gigs I find myself?

Only if your contract says so. This template lets you choose: no commission on work you find, or a lower rate if the manager contracts and collects it for you.

When should a manager pay the artist?

Within a fixed number of days of the client paying, with a statement. This template uses 7 days. C4E Talent pays its artists within 7 days.

Is an exclusive management contract enforceable after it ends?

A clause stopping you working with anyone else after the contract ends is void in India under section 27 of the Contract Act. Commission on clients the manager introduced, for a few months after, is a normal payment term.

How long should an artist management contract last?

A year, with renewal only if both sides agree in writing, and 30 days' notice to leave. Long lock-ins with automatic renewal are the terms performers most often regret.
